This month, we’ve been getting to know each other while learning how to test water quality and monitor the health of our local waterways. We also had inspiring visits from @texassierraclub @texansforcleanwater and @democrasexy, who spoke with us about civic engagement and registering to vote. It’s been a great start to the season! 🩵

Happy World Water Monitoring Day from Austin Youth River Watch! 💧🌎

Our River Watchers are dedicated citizen scientists, conducting water chemistry tests and field observations and then submitting this vital data to the LCRA to help monitor the health of our local water systems.

But their commitment goes beyond data collection! They take action by participating in trash cleanups, removing invasive species from riparian zones (the areas where land meets water), and planting native grasses and trees to prevent bank erosion. 🌿🌳

This World Water Monitoring Day, we’re celebrating our River Watchers and their active role in protecting and restoring our waterways!

🌊 Gulf Coast Trip Recap! River Watchers followe

🌊 Gulf Coast Trip Recap! River Watchers followed the Colorado River down to Matagorda Bay, testing water quality, learning all about oysters from park staff 🦪, and taking over nurdle patrol on Matagorda Beach. We enjoyed plenty of pool time at our cabins, devoured some amazing meals (shoutout to our personal chef, Emma 🍽️), and had a blast evening fishing—props to Leilani, Marquis, and Sydney for reeling in some catches 🎣! We wrapped up with a fun day trip to Rockport for beach time and souvenir shopping before heading back to ATX. What a trip! 🩵

Cohort 2 Highlights! ✨ We dove deep into pool swims, cruised on a bat boat tour on Lady Bird Lake with @batconservationinternational, and got crafty with @austincreativereuse, turning summer trash into a giant bat sculpture 🦇. You can now visit Mrs. Batreuse at ACR!!! We also spent a day with Urban Roots ATX, learning about urban agriculture and sustainable food practices 🌱. Plus, we explored the magic of mushroom mycoremediation 🍄 and the fascinating world of macroinvertebrates 🐛. This summer was one for the books! We are so thankful for all of the wonderful collaborations. 💙

Wrapping up the last week of Cohort 1 with a bang! From exploring the LCRA's Redbud Center with @lowercoloradoriverauthority & @coloradoriveralliance to a serene glass-bottom boat ride at @themeadowscenter, this week was packed with adventures! 🛶 We tested water quality at Barton Creek Habitat Preserve @nature_tx and swam at Rio Vista Park in San Marcos and learned about the Coahuiltecan creation story with the Indigenous Cultures Institute. @indigenouscultures 🌊✨ So proud of our amazing crew for their enthusiasm and curiosity! #riverwatch #austin #texas #atx #education #nonprofit #nature #environment #fun #adventure

Week 2 of our summer program with our River Watche

Week 2 of our summer program with our River Watchers has been incredible! This week, we partnered with the @shoalcreekconservancy to clean up trash and remove invasive plants, tackling ragweed and elephant ear. 🌱 Afterward, we had a fun water balloon fight at the eco house!!

We teamed up with @zilkerparkboats for a kayak trash cleanup on Barton Creek the next day. 🚣‍♂️ Finally, we went to Buttermilk Creek and collected over 210 lbs of trash! 🗑️

This week's adventure was swimming and cliff jumping at Blue Hole in Georgetown! We've been having a blast this summer and are excited to finish Cohort 1 this week! ☀️

Week 1 of the summer program has been amazing! 🌿 We started at CER, checking nests for Purple Martin babies; some students even got to hold them! 🐦💜 Then, we headed to Blair Woods for trail management, tackling invasive plants like sticky weed and hedge parsley. 🛠️

Adventure Friday took us caving at Grassy Cove Cave, where we spotted a Western Slimy Salamander and some incredible stalactites! This week has been incredible with our awesome River Watchers. We can’t wait for the adventures ahead! 🩵

BREAKING NEWS: The Green Workforce Collaborative h

BREAKING NEWS: The Green Workforce Collaborative has been awarded $2.1M through the Climate-Ready Workforce (CRW) for Coastal and Great Lakes States, Tribes, and Territories Initiative!

As a keystone organization of the Green Workforce Collaborative, Austin Youth River Watch will be receiving funds as a subgrantee to grow our programs and expand our impact. We are honored to be a part of this groundbreaking initiative.

The goal of the Green Workforce Collaborative is to create a sustainable, high-impact model for inclusive recruitment, skill-building, job training and certification, mentorship and community engagement among partners. The Collaborative will empower approximately 570 Texans from low-income and marginalized communities to pursue in-demand, living-wage green careers in various fields, including conservation, renewable energy and resilience, urban agriculture, green infrastructure, water management and more.

The CRW program supports communities across the U.S. by developing a skilled workforce capable of addressing climate challenges. Awardees are at the forefront of innovation, implementing cutting-edge strategies to enhance workforce readiness and climate resilience. These projects represent NOAA’s continued efforts to support workforce development across the United States and the commitment of the Biden-Harris administration to growing America’s economy through the Inflation Reduction Act.
