River Watchers are back in action for 2025—exploring the UT Insect Collection 🪲 to check out some incredible bugs and putting our homegrown fennel to good use. We are excited for what the rest of the year has in store for us!

📣We have some exciting news! AYRW is proud to be a beneficiary of Texas Table: A Feast for A Cause, hosted by @cooksnookaustin. Join us on February 25, 2025, at Lenoir in South Austin for an unforgettable evening of delicious food and giving back.Indulge in a four-course meal crafted by these culinary stars:

At River Watch, we embrace MLK Jr. Day as a day "on" rather than a day off. It’s a chance to give back to both our community and the environment! Even though the weather was cold (for us Texans) we had a total of 130 volunteers show up and participate in our annual Buttermilk Creek Trash Clean Up! 🤩

Thank you to all of our volunteers. Your efforts truly make a difference! Stay warm out there folks! 🩵

We toughed it out through the much-needed rain during an unforgettable overnight trip at Bastrop State Park, complete with fishing, camping, and memories to last a lifetime. As a member of EarthShare Texas, Austin Youth River Watch receives support from the nonprofit federation through unrestricted funding and capacity support. We are thrilled to be a part of their Green Leaders Fellowship 2025 cohort, and it is a privilege to introduce you to the Green Leader who will be amplifying the work of our organization over the course of the Fellowship.

Kimberly Juarez will be working on developing a Field Trip and Presentation Program that provides hands-on outdoor education opportunities to schools and other community groups, expanding AYRW's reach and impact.

This initiative seeks to expand opportunities for early-career environmentalists while simultaneously addressing capacity limitations for nonprofits - a nuanced solution that addresses Green Workforce constraints while building the green leadership pipeline. We’ve tackled multiple trash cleanups at local creeks, got our hands dirty planting for the bat and veggie garden at our EcoHouse, and even spent some time fishing! Plus, we’ve been working with a group from UT Austin to reimagine a park designed with youth in mind. So many exciting things happening, and we can’t wait for what’s next! 🎣🩵

Happy World Water Monitoring Day from Austin Youth

Happy World Water Monitoring Day from Austin Youth River Watch! 💧🌎

Our River Watchers are dedicated citizen scientists, conducting water chemistry tests and field observations and then submitting this vital data to the LCRA to help monitor the health of our local water systems.

But their commitment goes beyond data collection! They take action by participating in trash cleanups, removing invasive species from riparian zones (the areas where land meets water), and planting native grasses and trees to prevent bank erosion. 🌿🌳

This World Water Monitoring Day, we’re celebrating our River Watchers and their active role in protecting and restoring our waterways!
