October 5, 2017 | Hike at Hornsby Bend
12 River Watchers and 3 staff hiked through Hornsby Bend in search of American Beauty Berries. The students learned about recent research that suggests a chemical found in the leaves of this plant can be effective at repelling mosquitoes and other bugs. The staff led the students on a hike through the bottom-land forest to the “Big Tree”, noticeably the largest Pecan Tree, and collected leaves of the American Beauty Berry plant with the goal of producing a bug repellent.
