June 12, 2015: Eight River Watchers from Crockett, Eastside, and McCallum High Schools visited one of our regular testing sites on the Colorado River at Montopolis Bridge to learn about the basic physical and chemical properties of water. River Watchers reviewed how to identify a healthy riparian zone, noticing native plants that provide shade, a constant stream flow, habitat for wildlife and aquatic life, and vertical streambanks. They discussed how a healthy riparian zone will protect water as a natural resource. River Watchers created a drawing to illustrate optimal characteristics of a healthy riparian zone. To wrap up the day, they visited Barton Creek at Lost Creek to learn about beneficial vegetation in riparian zones. River Watchers enjoyed a picnic and then a swim in the cool water!
