June 26, 2013: Eight River Watchers spent time at Barton Lost Creek to look at the riparian area and hundred year flood plain. They observed a good example of tall deeply rooted native grasses in the riparian community. River Watchers discussed the benefits to the environment during storm events in which the tall deeply rooted grasses slow and filter the flood waters to aid in completing the hydrological cycle by allowing water to infiltrate into the soil so that the creek will be replenished with water coming out at seeps and springs in a more even baseflow. River Watchers reviewed concepts in preparation for the Mentor test.
